Services for undergraduates
Academic English language training for undergraduate law students is available for students studying law at the undergraduate level in English who have English as a second language. A common complaint from such students is that although their general English level might be high, they have little or no knowledge of academic English. They have not acquired the necessary academic English listening and speaking skills. Therefore, they find it difficult to understand lectures and to participate in tutorials.
The language training is online only. In addition, there are no group lessons. Only one-on-one lessons are available to encourage the highest level of participation and speaking time. It also allows for the kind of intensity needed for learning academic English.
The language training will use articles, podcasts, and lectures that are available online for free. They are going to provide summaries of the lectures and podcasts they have listened to and summaries of the articles they have read. The participants will do the summaries orally and in writing. The language training is in the form of a discussion with the student doing a greater part of the talking. The language trainer, who has an advanced degree in law, will ensure that they use the correct academic English terms. This approach will enable the student to acquire the necessary academic English listening and speaking skills.
Participants should note that they need a high degree of motivation for the academic English language training because it is very intensive.
